Jet power all the things! I love that era of aviation, when designers tried anything and everything just to see what worked. And what didn't. The pace of technological development was amazing.

The jet powered flying boat era in the US came and went too quickly for completely understandable reasons. By the mid to late 50's the Military sorted out who did what, mostly, and decided how do do their missions in forms that didn't include flying boats for patrol, long range attack, nuclear strike, SAR or almost anything else. For those roles them we had long-range land-based aircraft that didn't need to stop on the ocean to refuel, helicopters, aircraft carrier air wings, SLBM subs, and ICBMS. However, Russia's more littoral focus and their vast swath of undeveloped coastline, compared to our relatively developed one, created an environment that encouraged the flying boat for decades after we gave it up. This doesn't count the few Martin Marlins that soldiered on into the mid 60's.
